Reinforcing Active Learning with Power Point

Use Ppt

Ø  as a warm up e.g. to ask an opening question– get students to discuss in groups /pairs this avoids the faster students always answering
Ø  to get students brainstorming in groups/pairs
Ø  as a wrap up – for revision / overview of learning
Ø  as scaffolding e.g. for language they might need in their discussion, for instructions
Ø  to focus students on a key learning point; this supports student thinking, gives them time  and prevents them reading ahead, doing other exercises etc
Ø  for checking answers; it focuses them, as above   after group / pair discussion
Ø  for games like crosswords, for flash cards
Ø  for revision / catch up by making ppt available to the students especially if absent They do need something concrete to take away from the lesson, even if they don’t take advantage of it
Ø  for student presentations ; they prepare ppt of e.g. a MTR text, vocabulary, revision of a grammar point – gives them an opportunity to be creative too

Things to remember:-
§  Ppt can be monotonous if used too often – like anything else
§  Ppt is useless without interaction
§  PPT is useless without an aim
§  Make sure the lesson is not ‘ppt centred’ “Let the slide serve your message, rather than letting you be governed by the slide “ (Mann, M. 2007)
§  Don’t put too much text on a slide – it is difficult to read and distracting “If you wouldn’t write it on a blackboard, you shouldn’t write it in a slide” (Delwiche, A & Ananthanarayanan, V (2004)
§  Ppts can be time consuming to prepare – keep it simple and share using Drop Box
